Safety shoes are protective equipment used to shield employees from possible accidents in workplaces where heavy parts and sharp objects are frequently present.

As international statistics show, the foot, made up of 26 unprotected bones, is among the organs most likely to be injured in an accident. Feet carry and balance the body, so even a seemingly minor foot injury can leave a worker unable to do their job.

Where there is a risk of toes being struck or crushed, a steel toe cap becomes essential. To stay comfortable, the cap must be suitably thin and light, which is why carbon steel is used. Steel toe caps can be used safely in many types of work shoe and boot.

Rubber or synthetic outsoles in various patterns are used to prevent slipping, which matters particularly on wet and slippery floors. The material of the sole is more important than its shape: it must have a high coefficient of friction.

For work such as construction, footwear should additionally be reinforced with a metal midsole against nails, screws and sharp objects penetrating the sole, provided there is little chance of contact with live electrical equipment.

Where static electricity builds up, the safety shoe should have a conductive rubber sole.
